ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL IN PERSON MEET TOMORROW, TUESDAY, APRIL 27

Hankey Middle School staff is looking forward to having all of our in-person students together four days a week, starting tomorrowApril 27th, with our 100% virtual students still joining their classes virtually.  We will continue to follow safety and health guidelines with our students in class and during lunch.  Please remember to send your son or daughter with a water bottle, especially as the weather begins to warm up.

An important reminder for students returning to campus– all students need to have a charged chrome book with them every day as we will still be utilizing technology to access CANVAS and assignments throughout the school day..

Hankey elementary students also returned to school today in one full group, so please remember to allow for extra time when you are dropping off your child, as the number of students on campus has increased significantly, and there will be more cars in the drop off line each morning.

On behalf of the staff, we are all thrilled to be bringing back our red and gray cohorts as one unified group of students for the remaining five weeks of school!

A Special Reminder for Music Students in Periods 1, 4, and 5

To allow students taking Spanish to have a designated time for Spanish class for small group support and extension, whether in-person or online, we have come up with the following schedule for students who have Music in their schedule periods 1, 4 and 5 only, for the remainder of the school year:

Mondays: All students virtual with Music.

Tuesdays/Thursdays: Red cohort attend Music and Grey cohort attend Spanish.

Wednesdays/Fridays: Grey cohort attend Music and Red cohort attend Spanish.

8th Grade Slideshow

8th Grade Slideshow
We are looking forward to celebrating the Hankey MS 8th Grade Class of 2021, and are currently working on what this will look like, given our current safety parameters.

One of the Hankey traditions that we are definitely continuing is to show a slideshow of our 8th grade students with a picture from when they were little, as well as a current picture. We are asking every 8th grade family to provide us (1) picture as a baby and (1) current fun picture from this school year. If you are unable to provide a current picture, we can use the school picture from this year.

We would like the pictures to be attached to an email and sent to mtreider@capousd.org.

If you are unable to send the pictures in email, please bring them to the Hankey front office so we may make a copy.

The deadline to submit pictures is Friday, April 30th, 2021.  Thank you for your help with this very important Hankey tradition!

State Testing Update

From Principal Aguilera

I wanted to provide you with an update on state testing. Recently the State of California announced that districts could choose to give local assessments as an alternative to the regular state assessments (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress – CAASPP). Given the challenges of administering the lengthy state assessment, and as a result of flexibility provided by the State, our School Board approved our District’s recommendation that we administer local assessments for reading and math in grades 3 – 8, and CAASPP in grade 11 only.  The Board also approved the District’s recommendation that the District not administer the state science assessment (CAST) this year.  Here are the plans the Board approved at the April 21, 2021, Board meeting:

  • Grades 3 – 5: Students will complete iReady Reading and Math diagnostics tests.
  • Grades 6 – 8: Students will complete  iReady Reading and Math diagnostic tests.
  • The California Alternative Assessment (CAA) will be provided for those students with disabilities whose Individualize Education Plan (IEP) requires the administration of the CAA rather than the regular state assessments.
  • The District will not be administering the California Science Test for grades 5, 8, 11 or 12 due to the same constraints that we have with the CAASPP assessment.

More information will be provided regarding these assessments will be forthcoming.

Elementary-Welcome Back to Full Time School!

As all our Hankey scholars return to the classroom, it is important to remember that screening for illness at home is a critical part of each school day.

Screening at Home

  • Families need to take student temperatures each day before going to school. Any student with a fever of 100.4 F or higher should not go to a school site.

Drinking fountains are still turned off for safety reasons, so as the days begin to heat up, it is very important to send your child to school with a filled water bottle.

Before School Reminders: (7:45-8:00 am)

  • Kindergartners will continue to line up on the Kindergarten blacktop.
  • Students in grades 1-3rd will continue to line up at their normal teacher spots on the blacktop.
  • Students in grades 4th and 5th will now line up in front of their teachers’ classrooms.
  • Students in grades 6-8th will continue to line up in their designated areas.

Supervision in all areas begins at 7:45am. If a student must come to school earlier, please have him or her wait in front of the Office until 7:45 am.

As we return to full day, if you are bringing your child to school by car, please help us expedite the arrival process by following the supervising staff directions and pulling all the way forward.  Students should not be exiting the car in the red zones.

Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-7

We are excited to celebrate our teachers and staff! They spend countless hours working hard for our students. This year our teacher meals need to be pre-packaged. Instead of asking for food donations, we would love a donation of any amount to go towards the purchasing of box meals. You can do this online at https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=CRY64E98WMEYA or drop a donation at the front office in an envelope marked PTSA. All checks should be made out to Carl Hankey PTSA with Teacher Appreciation in the memo line. All funds raised will be used towards meals and snacks for our all star teachers and staff. Check next week’s Hawk Talk for more info on activities planned throughout the week. Thank you for your support!
